Roman Henin
Established in 2021 in AY, Champagne
In the Grand Cru village of Aÿ, Romain Hénin is part of a new generation of Champagne growers who are not afraid to question tradition. Born into a family of winegrowers, he grew up surrounded by vines, but his journey was never simply about following in his father’s footsteps.
After gaining experience with Sébastien Mouzon and Champagne Henri Giraud, Romain returned to the family domaine with a different vision. In 2016, he began working independently with just 1.2 hectares of rented vineyards, determined to explore organic farming and a more natural approach to winemaking. In 2021, he took over the family estate, bringing his brother Thomas alongside him and opening an entirely new chapter.
Today, the brothers work with organic and biodynamic practices, introducing agroforestry and herbal preparations to encourage biodiversity and bring life back into the vineyards. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentations, long ageing and minimal intervention allow each parcel and vintage to express its own character. The Champagnes are produced without added sulphites or dosage, resulting in wines full of energy, depth and individuality.
What I love about Romain is that his approach goes far beyond simply making natural Champagne. It is about rethinking the entire relationship between the vineyard, the winemaker and the wine. And the results are seriously exciting!
