Winery Gebrueder Andres

Deidesheim, Palatinate Forest

In the northern reaches of the Pfalz, where the vineyards of Deidesheim catch the first and last light of the day, Weingut Andres is quietly carving out its own path. When the brothers Thomas and Michael stepped into the family estate in 2015, they didn’t set out to make noise — only to work with a clearer sense of purpose, a clearer sense of place.

Their vines grow on soils shaped by time: weathered sandstone, limestone, and marl that lend both tension and calm to the fruit. The work in the vineyard is intentional, organic, and patient. Rows are tended by hand, not hurry. Each decision begins outside, among the vines, long before it ever reaches the cellar.

Nothing is pushed nor rushed

Below ground, the brothers let the wines move at their own rhythm. Gentle fermentations, careful use of wood, and a philosophy of minimal interference give each parcel the chance to speak in its own voice. Nothing is pushed. Nothing is rushed.

The result is a collection of wines that feel grounded and bright at the same time — wines with clarity, quiet energy, and a sense of honesty that can only come from people who know exactly where they stand. Each bottle carries a piece of Deidesheim, a piece of their family’s story, and the belief that refinement is a matter of patience, not force.

Lukas Hammelmann

Zeiskam, Palatinate Forest

In the wide, wind-brushed plains of the southern Pfalz, in the village of Zeiskam, Lukas Hammelmann is quietly reshaping expectations of what this landscape can give. He grew up hearing that these flat fields were meant for onions and potatoes, not for wine with depth or distinction. But instead of leaving for more famous slopes, he chose to stay — to trust that character can come from overlooked places.

His estate is small, intentionally so. A few hectares, each parcel selected because it speaks to him: loess for delicacy, limestone for cut and salt, sandstone for drive, old terraces for power and history. Even vines planted nearly a century ago still form part of his story. The vineyards are farmed organically because, for him, there is no other honest way to work

others saw limits

The wines that emerge are sharp-edged, energetic, uncompromising. They carry the coolness of Zeiskam, the tension of limestone, the clarity of a winemaker who refuses shortcuts. They are not wines that aim to charm first — they ask you to listen, to pay attention, to reconsider what this quiet corner of the Pfalz can be.

In every bottle, you feel the work of someone who saw potential where others saw limits. Someone who believed that authenticity begins with conviction, not reputation. And in that belief, Lukas Hammelmann is crafting some of the most distinctive, quietly electrifying wines of his region.

Winery Rings

FREINSHEIM, Palatinate Forest

„Weingut“ Rings is one of the driving forces behind the new generation of German wine. Run by brothers Andreas and Steffen Rings in Freinsheim.

Their philosophy is rooted in organic farming, meticulous vineyard work, and an obsession with expressing the character of their soils.

Ambition done right

The result? Wines that are vibrant, pure, and full of energy. The Pinot from Rings has become nothing short of a benchmark in Germany — deep, elegant, and full of quiet confidence. And their sparkling wines and Chardonnays stand among the very best I’ve ever had from Germany.

Rings is about precision and soul, about the courage to keep pushing boundaries while staying deeply connected to their land. It’s the taste of ambition done right.

ABOUT OUR WINE DROP 15

BREAKING BUrgund's comfort zone - part 1

What we have in the box nr. 15:

For over a year now, I’ve been tasting my way through Germany, searching for Chardonnay that stands on its own — not copied, not styled after somewhere else, but unmistakably itself. Bottle by bottle, I looked for clarity, for intention, for that quiet moment when a wine feels rooted in its place.

From all those tastings, six bottles rose above the rest. Six wines that feel genuine, focused, and confidently individual.

Here is Part 1.

Herzog 23 – Winery Andres

The 2023 Haardter Herzog Chardonnay from Weingut Andres grows on a slope shaped by limestone, marl and sandstone — a site that gives the wine both firmness and quiet depth. The grapes are spontaneously fermented with wild yeasts, then aged in a careful mix of new and used barriques, gaining texture while keeping its natural tension.

The result is a Chardonnay with clear, bright fruit, a fine salty edge and a long, mineral finish. It’s structured yet elegant — a wine that speaks gently but confidently of its place in the hills above Deidesheim.

Hochstadt Roter Berg 23 – Lukas Hammelmann

The 2023 Hochstadt Roter Berg Chardonnay from Lukas Hammelmann comes from an old parcel planted in 1980, rooted in the limestone- and sandstone-rich soils that define this quiet corner of the Pfalz. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously, moving through the cellar with the same calm, unforced rhythm that shapes all of Hammelmann’s wines.

The result is a Chardonnay that feels finely cut and quietly expressive — cool stone, a hint of flint, bright citrus and a lean, salty finish. It’s precise, understated and deeply tied to the hillside it comes from.

Kalk & Stein 2023 –  Winery Rings

The 2023 Kalk & Stein Chardonnay from Rings is shaped by its limestone-rich vineyards in Kallstadt, a cool site that gives the wine its linear, mineral backbone. The grapes are fermented spontaneously with wild yeasts and then aged for many months on the full lees in used wooden barrels, gaining quiet depth without heaviness. Bottled unfiltered and with minimal sulphur, the wine shows bright citrus, fine saltiness and a chalky precision that reflects both soil and thoughtful, restrained craftsmanship
