WINEMAKER

Lapo Berti

Lapo Berti is one of those winemakers whose story feels almost impossible to plan. His path to La Morra was not shaped by inherited vineyards or generations of family tradition, but by curiosity, travel and an almost obsessive desire to understand how truly great wine is made.

For almost twenty years, Lapo moved between the northern and southern hemispheres, chasing harvests and working across Australia, New Zealand, Oregon, Sonoma, Piedmont and Burgundy. Along the way, he worked with producers including Selvapiana, Roberto Voerzio, Nicolas Potel, Michel Picard, Cameron and Stephen Pannell. Each experience sharpened his instincts and helped shape the incredibly precise, perfectionist approach that defines his wines today.

His time as the full-time winemaker at Enzo Boglietti proved particularly important. It was in Piedmont that his relationship with Nebbiolo became increasingly serious, before he finally settled in La Morra and launched his own project in 2012.

Today, Lapo farms around two hectares of leased vineyards himself, including Nebbiolo parcels in the La Morra MGAs of Fossati, Bricco Rocca and Serradenari. In 2022, he expanded the project with additional vineyards in Dogliani. Everything is farmed organically, with a strong focus on healthy, living soils and a naturally balanced environment for the vines. The scale remains tiny, but the experience behind it is anything but.

The cellar work is precise, patient and deliberately low-intervention. The grapes are harvested by hand, fully destemmed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Fermentations are long and take place partly in stainless steel and partly in open, neutral wooden vessels, without temperature control. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration, with only minimal amounts of sulphur added. Nothing is forced, polished or made louder than it naturally is.

Lapo is still one of La Morra’s best-kept secrets. A deeply experienced, uncompromising perfectionist making Nebbiolo with perfume, tension and quietly serious power. These are not wines built around noise or status. They are precise, soulful and completely personal.
