Nicolas Barbou
Established in 2019 in Oisly, Loire Valley
Nicolas Barbou is one of the most exciting young winemakers to emerge from the Loire in recent years. Based in Oisly in the Touraine, he is taking Sauvignon Blanc into a completely different direction, with the kind of precision, patience and ambition you would normally associate with serious white Burgundy.
And that comparison is not accidental. Before starting his own project, Nicolas worked in New Zealand and later moved to Burgundy, where he spent time at Domaine Boisson Vadot and, most importantly, with Jean Yves Bizot in Vosne Romanée. Those years left a clear mark. Long élevage, obsessive attention to detail and the idea that great wine needs time rather than manipulation became central to everything Nicolas does today.
In 2019, he released his first vintage under his own name. The project started tiny and remains tiny today, but the ambition is enormous. Nicolas works with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin, Gamay and Pinot Noir across roughly 2.3 hectares, producing wines that feel far removed from the usual image of Touraine.
Everything is done with precision. The vineyards are harvested by hand, fermentations start naturally with indigenous yeasts and much of the vinification takes place in barrel. The wines stay there for a long time. Nicolas is not interested in making Sauvignon that is loud, aromatic or immediately obvious. He is looking for texture, tension, depth and an almost extreme purity.
And that is exactly what makes these wines so exciting. They have the energy and freshness of the Loire, but the structure and seriousness feel almost Burgundian. Utopie Créative, Folie Insolente, Alchimie Passionnelle. Even the names tell you that Nicolas is not interested in playing it safe.
The project is still incredibly young, quantities are microscopic and the wines have already become seriously sought after. Nicolas Barbou is not simply another young Loire producer to watch. He is one of those winemakers who makes you completely rethink what Sauvignon Blanc from Touraine can be.
